Description CDCs Are on CSPs’ Radar

About two years ago, Yankee Group introduced the concept of centralized dynamic catalogs (CDCs), which we believe provide the only way for communications service providers (CSPs) to address their end-to-end product management and fulfillment challenges (see the April 2008 Yankee Group Report “It’s Time for Carriers to Adopt Centralized Dynamic Catalog Strategy”). CDCs provide an effective bridge to connect disparate operational support systems (OSSs) and billing support systems (BSSs). When we presented our CDC vision, vendors were going hammer and tongs over the concept of enterprise product catalogs (EPCs), which are more of a BSS value proposition. And they weren’t paying too much attention to the need for connecting the EPC to the service and resource side of OSSs, which we believe is critical to the end-to-end product life cycle management (PLM) story.

A CDC goes beyond the product or service catalog because it manages, creates, launches and provisions all products and services in the service provider’s portfolio. A CDC streamlines and orchestrates service providers’ overall product strategy. It also provides end-to-end capability, enabling quicker product launch and minimizing fulfillment errors—key improvements that are critical to ensuring customer stickiness and reducing churn. We believe close alignment and seamless integration between the EPC and the service and resource catalogs is the basis for a successful, horizontal CDC strategy.
